Slack: A Day in the Life of Ford Aston
(A Rook & Ronin Spin Off Novella)
by JA Huss
4 STARS
A quick read and a glimpse into the most secretive character
in this series so far!
Ford Aston is probably the most mysterious member of
this group at the moment, we know very little about him, past or present other
than the fact that he is completely in love with Rook, a woman that he cannot
have, ever. This novella picks up after Panic. Spencer and Rook have wrapped up
filming the reality show and everyone is off enjoying the holidays in their own
ways after all of the craziness has seemingly passed. Ford isn’t close with
anyone, including his own family so that leaves him feeling like even more of
an outsider, now spending Christmas Eve alone. This is his own doing of course,
but it still doesn’t sit well with Ford this year.
In this novella we are finally given some insight into
how Ford thinks and feels; it is a story told from his perspective alone. We
also get a small glimpse into his past and his relationship with his
mother. On this day a chance meeting,
with a random stranger, causes Ford to take pause and really contemplate how he
has been living his life, how he handles his relationships, and for maybe the
first time ever Ford may want something different.
I enjoyed this quick spin off from Ford’s perspective;
it feels like a lead in to what is to come next. Just allowing a chance for the
reader to become more invested and intrigued by what is just around the corner.
I look forward to reading the next book, in which hopefully I will finally be
able to understand this very complex character. Taught is up next, wish me
luck!
